Adonis is the pen name of Ali Ahmed Sa’id, who is a leading Arab poet noted for his progressive Arabic writing style, which brings modernism to an ancient language and literary tradition. For his contributions to literature, he has twice been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature.

It has been said of him that “there is Arabic poetry before Adonis, and there is Arabic poetry after Adonis” (Samuel Hazo).
